Many children use gestures at first before they use words.
Encourage speech to develop alongside the gestures by repeating the appropriate word to your child when they are using a ‘gesture’. If your child tells you their needs by pointing to things or fetching things, again, repeat the appropriate words to them when this happens. This will encourage them to copy.
