Encouraging use of verbs (action words) Minimize
Fun games for action words.
  • Play a “Bossing teddy or dolly” game. You tell the teddy what to do and help your child make the teddy move. Then ask your child to tell teddy to ‘dance’, ‘walk’, ‘run’, ‘wave’ etc. As your child gets used to this you can then encourage your child to tell teddy what to do without any help from yourself.
  • Make a game of encouraging your child to follow your instructions of ‘sit down’, ‘jump’ etc. Then swap over so that your child can tell you what to do.
  • Look through magazines and picture books and cut out or point out pictures of people doing different things. Encourage your child to tell you what they are doing.
  • Encourage your child to help you with some of the household jobs. Give ham a choice of what he can do to help: “Would you like to do the brushing or dusting?” Accompany each word with an appropriate gesture. Encourage him to tell you which he would like to do. You can do this with other activities. Ask your child if he would like to do cooking or painting for example.
